The Vagrant – A mute lead doesn’t hold this one back

The VagrantThe Vagrant by Peter Newman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A really good debut.
The setting is properly nightmareish with a strong grimdark vibe. Full of dark demons , possession , mutants and other horrors. The main character is a mute hero, never uttering a word. The world buildng is approached in an interesting way , slowly revealing as the story goes along and the journey progresses. All the horror is very well balanced by the presence of a baby carried by the hero and a goat they pick up on the way , adding humour and joy to the story.
I was tilting to 4 stars but realised I smiled throughout most of the book and on reflection really want to revisit the world and characters so worth the extra star.

About Paul Walsh

I'm a big fan of fantasy and scifi, which would make up most of my reading but will branch out often enough. Favourite authors vary over time but generally include Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Conn Iggulden, Robert Harris, Karen Maitlan, Kate Mosse, Anne Rice, Philip K Dick, Ray Bradbury. John Scalzi, Mark Lawrence, Pat Rothfuss and a host of others. I'm not the harshest reviewer but will note down a few words on all books I read.
