The Shadowed Sun ( Dream Blood 2) by NK Jemisin, Brilliant but Dark and Disturbing 5 Star Read

The Shadowed Sun (Dreamblood, #2)The Shadowed Sun by N.K. Jemisin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A brilliant follow up in the series , although being set 10 years later and with different main characters its almost a standalone.I love the dream based magic system abd NK Jemisin expands on it here looking at another branch , the sharers in more detail
This book is dark and twisted in many ways and borders on disturbing in parts as the author shows the potential power of nightmares in a society where dreams are so powerful.
NK Jemisin has a special skill of going against expectations in a book . As the second in a series certain preconceived ideas from book one are flipped on their heads. A lot of book 1 is reversed, one of the heros here would be pretty much the villain in book one.
The story also develops into a near perfect love stort, with a very satisfying and beautifully written conclusion.
NK Jemisin really is a breath of fresh air in fantasy.

About Paul Walsh

I'm a big fan of fantasy and scifi, which would make up most of my reading but will branch out often enough. Favourite authors vary over time but generally include Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Conn Iggulden, Robert Harris, Karen Maitlan, Kate Mosse, Anne Rice, Philip K Dick, Ray Bradbury. John Scalzi, Mark Lawrence, Pat Rothfuss and a host of others. I'm not the harshest reviewer but will note down a few words on all books I read.
