N0S4A2 by Joe Hill , A halloween Read for Dragons and Jetpacks Book Group

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Horror isn’t my thing, I’ve found previous books I’ve tried a bit too cheesy and cringeworthy rather than scary. But with it being Halloween I thought I’d try a book that has come highly recomended.
And I am glad I did.
This book really got under my skin. Charles Manx is a truly terrifying character, his simple minded Renfeld style character Bing comes across as very sinister. The whole concept and writing are so well delivered that at no point does the book seem forced or cheesy.
The real power is Hill subverting traditionally good ideas, primarily Christmas in the warped Christmasland setup and the twist on pure Innocence actually being something quite dark and inhuman.
The book is so well paced and Hill plays with chapters leading into each other to set tension without overdoing the trick. His style is ,simply put ,brilliant.
Definitely a writer I will check out again

About Paul Walsh

I'm a big fan of fantasy and scifi, which would make up most of my reading but will branch out often enough. Favourite authors vary over time but generally include Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Conn Iggulden, Robert Harris, Karen Maitlan, Kate Mosse, Anne Rice, Philip K Dick, Ray Bradbury. John Scalzi, Mark Lawrence, Pat Rothfuss and a host of others. I'm not the harshest reviewer but will note down a few words on all books I read.
