Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho A nice fix for Susanna Clarke Fans 4 of 5 stars

Sorcerer to the CrownSorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Many strong similarities to Susanna Clarkes work, same time frame, same idea of fairyland sitting alongside England and magic linked mainly to gentlemen and the upper classes.
Also similar to Jonathan Strange a d Mr Norell the book is quite the slow burner. Its slowly an carefully constructed, being almost too slow in stages. The detail and build up draw quite an interesting social, magical and political system , the author also stretches the setup to the world further afield.
Definitely an interesting debut, well drawn characters, a nice use of language , and occasional turn of humour.
Sometimes that pacing was a little too slow but the book is finished very well and is well set up for the follow on.

About Paul Walsh

I'm a big fan of fantasy and scifi, which would make up most of my reading but will branch out often enough. Favourite authors vary over time but generally include Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Conn Iggulden, Robert Harris, Karen Maitlan, Kate Mosse, Anne Rice, Philip K Dick, Ray Bradbury. John Scalzi, Mark Lawrence, Pat Rothfuss and a host of others. I'm not the harshest reviewer but will note down a few words on all books I read.
