Sci Fi Month – Review of Golden Son by Pierce Brown – Amazing-Somehow improves on Red Rising

Golden SonGolden Son by Pierce Brown
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I took my time getting around to this series, the hype made me wary but Red Rising was stunning and I’m glad I was nudged into finally giving it a go.
I was still a tad wary coming into this book. How could it possibly follow on from such a great book and where could Brown go with the story to keep it fresh?
But again no need to worry, Golden Son is not only worthy to follow Red Rising it actually does the impossible and improves on it.
The story moves on completely, the setting is completely different and Darrow has to completely adapt again. The political maneuverings are again brilliant and the couple of big reveals throughout the book are done brilliantly.
Great books draw you in and you start to live them and this book definitely manages that.
And what a painful ending leaving a terrible need to get my hands on the final part as quickly as possible(Damn thing isn’t out yet).

On a side note books like this are the reason I love being in a book group. If I hadn’t joined Dragons and Jetpacks I don’t know if I ever would have picked the series up.

About Paul Walsh

I'm a big fan of fantasy and scifi, which would make up most of my reading but will branch out often enough. Favourite authors vary over time but generally include Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Conn Iggulden, Robert Harris, Karen Maitlan, Kate Mosse, Anne Rice, Philip K Dick, Ray Bradbury. John Scalzi, Mark Lawrence, Pat Rothfuss and a host of others. I'm not the harshest reviewer but will note down a few words on all books I read.

Read this review sorta through my fingers as I’m afraid to spoil myself as I haven’t even read the first book yet! I should totally get on to reading these books..

  3. I am totally stuck with this book, I loved Red Rising and I just struggled to get in to this book but it could be more because I have had a big gap between reading Red Rising and this but I am not giving up, must try again!
